Today, Students for Justice in Palestine at UCLA (SJP at UCLA) announces the launch of its campaign to divest from corporations involved in violations of Palestinian human rights. This year, we are working to increase our transparency even further through an inclusive resolution process and week long series of events to educate the campus about the issues relevant to this resolution.
Currently the University of California is invested in companies that profit from and enable the military occupation of Palestine. These companies, which readers can learn about at our divestment webpage, provide services and products that are used to systematically violate the basic human rights of Palestinians living within the West Bank and the Gaza Strip - rights that include freedom of movement, the right to education, the right to life and security of person. These are rights that we, as UCLA students, are privileged enough to enjoy and which we so often take for granted. Because the UC Regents invests student funds into these companies without student consent, students have become complicit in the repeated human rights abuses that Palestinians suffer on a daily basis.
In response, a broad and growing coalition of students is supporting divestment, a method of ending our complicity with these human rights violations and bringing an end to these oppressive acts. In order for any peaceful solution to the occupation to be successful and effective, there must first be a recognition of the human rights abuses that Palestinians suffer, followed by action taken to end such abuses.
SJP at UCLA encourages all students to attend educational events on Palestine during Week 5 and to be involved in our divestment process. On Tuesday, November 4th, we will unveil the core of our proposal through our divestment webpage and provide an online forum for students to provide feedback and input. After receiving input, we will be holding a town hall on the resolution on Monday November 10th. Following the town hall, we will take all relevant input from students and student groups and use it to finalize our resolution. We will then submit it to the Undergraduate Students Association Council for their consideration.
We are proud to follow in the footsteps of UCLA activists who have, for decades, worked to undo their complicity in oppressive acts, from divestment from South African apartheid to ending relationships with sweatshop apparel manufacturers. Today, we are particularly proud to stand beside student campaigns to divest the University of California from the prison industrial complex and the fossil fuel industry. We look forward to the day when the University of California’s investments are aligned with the standards of ethical practice, and to the day when Palestinians and Israelis are protected by the same inalienable human rights.
