Gandhi once said "What is going on in Palestine today cannot be justified by any moral code of conduct." That was in 1938; 76 years later, this sad statement remains true.
Enough is enough. Just as we don't tolerate violence within South Asia, Indus does not tolerate violence anywhere, including Palestine.
This statement specifically addresses divesting our tuition money from American companies that violate human rights both domestically and internationally, particularly against the Palestinian community. This statement officially endorses the resolution titled: A Resolution to Divest from Companies that Engage in Violence Against Palestinians.
Colonialism, human rights violations, and suffering are not unique to just Palestine. Representing communities that have dealt with and still face human rights violations, Indus refuses to be complicit in this act of violence against any community, South Asian or not.
Indus is proud to support this resolution by Students for Justice in Palestine and will support divestment from any companies that violate human rights. In endorsing this resolution, Indus would like to reinforce its support for humanity, and support for peace between all communities. We extend our utmost condolences to those suffering in Gaza and the West Bank and hope that this is a step towards a world with less human rights violations.
Indus would like to recognize that the South Asian community at UCLA isn't one voice or made up of one opinion. While Indus hopes to unite all South Asians and has worked to represent as many South Asian students as we can, we recognize that Indus does not and cannot represent the voice of all South Asians. We also do not take into consideration the foreign policy of South Asian nations, but rather the feedback and opinions we received from South Asian students at UCLA. However, we do hope that more and more South Asians can stand in solidarity with Palestine and with the many around the world who face oppression and lack the basic right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
The Indus Staff is and always will remain committed to working towards a better and more peaceful Palestine as well a better and more peaceful world. Thank You.
