We are a group of UCLA Iranian student leaders and alumni with strong ties to the Iranian community on campus and in the greater Los Angeles area. We would like to officially support the divestment resolution being put forward to divest from companies that are complicit in the perpetration of violence and occupation onto the Palestinian people. As Iranians, we have been highly politicized in the United States and through the years, many of our community members have faced the direct implications of war, violence, and systematic oppression by corrupt leaders. As a partial result of this, many in the greater Los Angeles Iranian community may be apathetic to this issue or may show fear in discussing it.
Iranians come from various ethnic, cultural, and religious groups including but not limited to Muslims, Christians, Jews, Zoroastrians, Baha'is, and Atheists; there is therefore not one single Iranian experience given these many identities and histories. We understand that by taking this position, many in our community will discredit us due to ignorance, Islamophobia, ethnocentrism, and anti-Arab sentiment. We welcome those community members to challenge their ideologies and stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people. As a group, we believe that we must support all oppressed people regardless of their ethnicity, race, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, or national origin. In 2009, the Iranian Student Group endorsed “A resolution in support of: A Call for the Immediate End To the Recent Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza” and it is with the same sentiment that we are proud to show our support for this resolution.
